Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce

The Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce is thick, sweet, tangy, and smoky with the classic balance that makes this style so good on just about everything. Brown sugar, molasses, and honey give it that signature rich sweetness, while apple cider vinegar, tomato sauce, mustard, chili powder, and smoked paprika keep it bright, savory, and layered instead of one-note. It simmers into a glossy, clingy sauce that is perfect for brushing on ribs, pulled pork, chicken, burgers, burnt ends, or using as a dipping sauce.

Servings: 16 ounces

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients into a saucepan over medium heat using a whisk.
  • Bring to a boil and then allow it to simmer over medium heat for about 20 minutes.
  • Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool down before transferring to an airtight container. You can store this in the fridge for about 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Stir constantly to avoid burning while the sauce is simmering.
  • Store the cooled BBQ sauce in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • For longer storage, freeze it in freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 3 months, leaving a little room for expansion. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and stir well before using.
